KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Thai Group posted a net profit of THB2.12bil (RM257.04mil)in the first half of 2022, a 121.6% jump over its performance in the same period last year as the group reined in operating expenses and expected credit losses.

In a statement filed with Bursa Malaysia, the bank said the improvements offset a marginal drop of 1.3% in its operating income to THB7.11bil for the period.

"Operating expenses decreased by THB229.7mil or 7.4% year-on-year, largely due to better optimisation of cost management.

"This consequently improved the cost-to-income ratio to 52.8% in 6M22 compared to 56.3% in 6M21," it said.

On a y-o-y basis, CIMB Thai said operating income was impacted by an 8.2% decline in net interest income due to lower interest income on loan and hire purchase business.

Consequently, the bank's net interest margin (NIM) over earning assets stood at 2.8% in 6M22 compared to 3.2% in 6M21.

However, CIMB Thai's net fee and service income increased 26.7% on the back of higher insurance fees.

Other operating income increased THB143.5mil or 9.9%, mainly attributed to gains on financial instruments measured at fair value through profit or loss and other income, offset by higher losses on investments.

As at June 30, 2022, total gross loans (inclusive of loans guaranteed by other banks and loans to financial institutions) stood at THB220.2bil, an increase of 3.9% from Dec 31, 2021.

Deposits (inclusive of bills of exchange, debentures and selected structured deposit products) stood at THB282.9bil, an increase of 18.1% from THB239.5bil as at end-December 2021.

The modified loan-to-deposit ratio decreased to 77.8% from 88.5% as at Dec 31, 2021.

Gross non-performing loans (NPL) stood at THB7.4bil, with a lower equivalent gross NPL ratio of 3.3% compared to 3.7% as at Dec 31, 2021, following the sale of some NPLs in 6M22.

CIMB Thai Group’s loan loss coverage ratio as at 30 June 2022 stood at 114.3% from 117.5% at the end of December 2021.

Total allowance for expected credit losses stood at THB7.7bil, THB1.5bil over the Bank of Thailand’s reserve requirements

Total consolidated capital funds as at June 30, 2022 stood at THB53.8bil.

The BIS ratio stood at 21.6%, of which 15.7% comprised Tier-1-capital.
